Why engineers benefit from a plain-text CV
Civil engineering applications frequently go to firms whose systems parse uploads, and licensure status is the detail you cannot afford to have dropped by a template.
What engineering firms look for
Licensure, stated precisely. EIT or FE passed, PE licensed and in which states, or chartered status where that applies. This determines what work you can stamp and is therefore the first thing checked.
Sub-discipline. Structural, geotechnical, transportation, water resources, land development, construction management. These are close to separate professions in practice; a generic civil engineering CV reads as unplaced.
Project scale and your role. Project value, size, duration, and whether you were designer, project engineer or project manager. “$14M grade-separated intersection, design lead for drainage” is far more useful than “worked on transportation projects.”
Codes and jurisdictions. The design codes you work to and the agencies you have permitted through. Local approval experience is genuinely valuable and transfers unevenly, so name it.

- Delivery: permitting, agency coordination, construction administration, submittal and RFI review, QA/QC, feasibility studies
What weakens a civil engineering CV
Project lists without your role. Firms need to know what you personally produced, not what the office delivered.
No values or quantities. Dollar value, span, capacity, area, length. Engineering is a quantitative profession and a CV without quantities is conspicuous.
Omitting field experience. Construction administration and site observation are highly valued and frequently left off by design-focused candidates.
Silence on permitting. Getting a project approved is often harder than designing it, and experience with a specific agency can be the reason you are hired.
Not stating PE progress. If you are working toward licensure, give the exam status and expected date; firms plan around it.
