Why a plain-text CV suits support work

Support professionals apply broadly, and every posting wants a slightly different emphasis — more hardware here, more Microsoft 365 there. Keeping the résumé in Markdown makes tailoring a two-minute edit rather than a fight with a template, and the exported PDF looks the same every time.

What IT hiring managers check first

Support hiring is volume hiring, and screens are fast. Three things get looked for immediately.

Certifications, near the top. CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Microsoft and ITIL certifications are frequently hard filters. If you hold them, they should be visible without scrolling; if you are studying for one, say so with an expected date.

The environment you supported. “Supported 400 users across three sites on a Windows and M365 estate, with a mixed Dell and Lenovo fleet” tells a hiring manager instantly whether your experience transfers. Vague support claims do not.

Volume and speed. Tickets handled per week, first-contact resolution rate, average resolution time, SLA attainment. Support is one of the most measurable jobs there is, and most support résumés contain no measurements at all — which makes the ones that do stand out sharply.

Systems and certifications support screens match

  • Directory and identity: Active Directory, Entra ID, Group Policy, SSO, MFA, account provisioning
  • Productivity estate: Microsoft 365, Exchange, SharePoint, Teams, Google Workspace
  • Device management: Intune, SCCM, Jamf, imaging, patch management, asset management
  • Ticketing: ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, Zendesk, Freshservice
  • Networking: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, VLAN, wireless troubleshooting
  • Practice: tier 1 / tier 2 escalation, remote support, onboarding and offboarding, ITIL, incident and problem management

What weakens a support résumé

“Troubleshooting” with no object. Troubleshooting what — printers, Outlook profiles, VPN connectivity, imaging failures? Specificity is the whole signal here.

Hiding the certifications. A cert listed only at the bottom of page two may never be seen by a human, and may be missed by a filter looking near the top.

No numbers. Ticket volume and resolution times are easy to give and immediately calibrating. Without them, every support résumé reads the same.

Underselling the soft side. Much of the job is staying calm with a frustrated executive whose laptop died before a board meeting. Evidence of customer satisfaction scores, training delivered, or documentation written is genuinely differentiating.

Not showing progression. Support careers move tier 1 to tier 2 to sysadmin. If you have moved, make the trajectory obvious; if you want to, point the résumé at where you are going.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this IT support resume template free? +

Yes. Edit it in your browser and export to PDF, DOCX, or HTML with no account, no watermark, and no usage limit.

What should an IT support resume highlight? +

Volume and quality together: tickets resolved, first-contact resolution rate, and SLA compliance. The sample bolds those so a hiring manager sees your throughput at a glance.

Do certifications matter for IT support? +

Yes — CompTIA A+, Network+, and vendor certs are often screened for. Give them their own section like the template does.
