Why reps benefit from a quick-to-tailor CV

Sales roles vary widely — inside, field, territory, distribution, retail wholesale — and each posting rewards a different emphasis. A Markdown source makes swapping that emphasis a two-minute job.

What sales managers read first

Numbers, in the shape of your role. Quota attainment, revenue generated, units moved, accounts opened, territory growth. Give the base figure alongside the percentage so the achievement is legible.

Territory or account context. Geographic size, number of accounts, whether you inherited a book or built one. Growing a mature territory 12% can be harder than growing a new one 60%, and saying which you did shows you understand your own results.

Activity that produced results. Calls, meetings booked, demos delivered, conversion at each stage. Managers use these to judge whether your results are repeatable or lucky.

Product and industry. Technical products, regulated industries, long approval cycles and distributor relationships all transfer unevenly. Name the category.

Territory and cycle terms sales screens match

  • Motion: inside sales, field sales, territory management, account management, business development, cold calling, prospecting, lead qualification
  • Cycle: needs assessment, product demonstration, objection handling, negotiation, closing, upselling, cross-selling, renewals
  • Context: B2B, B2C, wholesale, distribution, retail, key accounts, channel partners
  • Tools: Salesforce, HubSpot, Zoho, Pipedrive, CRM management, pipeline reporting

What makes a sales record look thin

“Exceeded targets” with no target. The most common line on sales résumés and the least informative.

No activity metrics. Results without inputs leave a manager unable to judge how you work.

Omitting retention. Winning accounts is half the job; keeping them is what makes the revenue real. Renewal and retention rates are persuasive and rarely included.

Ignoring the unglamorous strengths. Route planning, CRM hygiene, accurate forecasting and paperwork discipline are things sales managers complain about constantly — evidence you do them well genuinely stands out.

Job hopping left unexplained. Sales turnover is normal, but a one-clause reason (territory eliminated, company acquired) prevents the reader inventing a worse one.
