Why teachers benefit from a text-first CV
District application portals parse uploaded files, and teaching applications often go to several districts at once with slightly different emphases. Markdown makes tailoring quick and keeps certification details where a parser can find them.
What principals and hiring panels look for
Certification and endorsements, up front. The state or jurisdiction, the licence type, grade bands and subject endorsements, plus expiry. Districts filter on this before anything else, and an endorsement you hold but did not list is an endorsement you do not have.
Grade levels and subjects actually taught. Be specific. “Secondary science” is weaker than “Grades 9–11 biology and chemistry, including two sections of AP Biology.”
Evidence of student learning. Growth data, pass rates, AP or exam outcomes, reading level gains, intervention results. Teaching is measured cautiously and unevenly, but a teacher who can cite movement in student outcomes stands apart from one describing activities.
Range of learners. Experience with IEPs and 504 plans, English language learners, gifted programmes, and co-teaching or inclusion models. Nearly every classroom needs this and many résumés omit it.
Certification and practice terms district screens match
- Credentials: state teaching licence, subject endorsement, certification, Praxis, National Board Certification, ESL/TESOL, special education certification
- Practice: differentiated instruction, lesson planning, curriculum development, formative and summative assessment, classroom management, small-group instruction, co-teaching, IEP, 504, RTI/MTSS
- Context: standards-aligned instruction, data-driven instruction, PLC, parent communication, student engagement
- Tools: Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, PowerSchool, Seesaw
What weakens a teaching résumé
Describing what all teachers do. Planning lessons and managing a classroom is the job. What did you build, lead, or change?
No outcomes at all. Even qualitative evidence — a schoolwide initiative you led, a curriculum you wrote and others adopted — beats an activity list.
Leaving out class sizes and school context. Title I, rural, urban, class size, whether the school was under improvement. Context makes achievements legible.
Ignoring leadership. Department chair, mentoring student teachers, committee work, coaching, club sponsorship. Districts hire teachers who contribute beyond their room.
A designed template. District portals handle these poorly, and certification data is exactly what gets lost.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this teacher resume template free? +
Yes. Edit it in your browser and export to PDF, DOCX, or HTML with no account, no watermark, and no usage limit.
How do I quantify teaching on a resume? +
Student outcomes: proficiency gains, reduced failure rates, test-score growth. The sample bolds these because achievement data is the strongest evidence of effective teaching.
Where do teaching credentials go? +
In a dedicated section, as the template does. Districts screen for valid credentials and authorizations first, so make them easy to verify.
