Why writers should draft the CV in Markdown

Markdown is the working format of most publishing pipelines, so a writer keeping their own CV in it is simply consistent. It also removes the formatting fiddling that eats an afternoon in a word processor.

What editors read first

Published work, linked and specific. Named publications or brands, and links that go to your byline rather than a homepage. Writers who make the reader hunt for samples lose to writers who do not.

Range, stated plainly. Long-form, landing pages, technical documentation, email, ghostwriting for executives. These are genuinely different skills; claiming all of them without evidence reads as none of them.

Performance where it exists. Traffic, rankings, conversion, time on page, pipeline influenced. Writers who can connect words to outcomes are rare and priced accordingly. If you write for brand rather than performance, say so — it is a legitimate specialism.

Process. Interviewing subject matter experts, working from briefs, handling edits, meeting a cadence. Editors hire for reliability as much as prose.

Terms editors and recruiters search for

  • Formats: long-form content, blog, landing page copy, email, case studies, whitepapers, technical documentation, UX writing
  • Practice: SEO writing, keyword research, content strategy, editorial calendar, style guide, subject matter expert interviews
  • Measurement: organic traffic, conversion rate, engagement, content performance
  • Systems: CMS, WordPress, Contentful, Webflow, Google Docs, Markdown

What weakens a writing résumé

Word counts as achievement. “Wrote 300 articles” says volume, not quality or effect.

“Excellent communication skills.” On a writer’s résumé this is not a claim, it is an assumption — and stating it wastes a line that could hold a link.

No niche. Generalist writers compete with everyone. A stated domain — fintech, healthcare, developer tooling — narrows the field dramatically in your favour.

Typos. Obvious, and still the most common reason a writing application is rejected. Read it aloud before exporting.

Portfolio behind a dead link. Check every URL before you apply; the reader will not chase a 404.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this content writer resume template free? +

Yes. Edit it in your browser and export to PDF, DOCX, or HTML with no account, no watermark, and no usage limit.

How do I prove writing impact on a resume? +

Traffic, rankings, and conversions. 'Wrote articles' says little; 'grew a blog to 120K monthly visits' says everything. The sample bolds those results.

Should I link a portfolio or clips? +

Always. A portfolio link in the header and a dedicated section lets hiring managers read your actual writing — the strongest evidence you can offer.
