Why designers benefit from a text-based CV
Designers are the group most likely to over-design their own résumé, and most likely to be filtered out by it. A recruiter’s system reads text; an elaborate multi-column layout with the contact details inside a graphic often arrives as an unreadable mess. Markdown produces a clean, parseable document — and your portfolio, not the CV, is where the design argument gets made.
What creative directors look for
The portfolio link, immediately. It is the single most important element. It belongs near your name, not at the bottom, and it must not be a dead or password-protected URL.
Your role in each piece. Design work is collaborative. Saying whether you led the concept, executed to an existing system, or art-directed others is what a design lead actually wants to know.
Systems thinking. Design systems, component libraries, brand guidelines, templates handed to non-designers. Anything showing you make work that scales beyond yourself is disproportionately valuable.
Business context. A rebrand that supported a repositioning, packaging that moved shelf performance, campaign assets tied to a result. Designers who speak to outcomes are trusted with bigger briefs.
Craft and tooling terms design screens match
- Tools: Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Figma
- Disciplines: brand identity, visual identity, typography, layout, art direction, packaging, motion graphics, print production
- Systems: design systems, brand guidelines, asset libraries, templates
- Practice: creative brief, stakeholder presentation, print specification, prepress, accessibility and colour contrast
What weakens a designer’s résumé
A heavily designed résumé file. Ironic and very common. Keep the CV plain and let the portfolio carry the craft.
Contact details inside an image. Frequently unreadable to both parsing systems and a recruiter copying an email address.
Tool proficiency bars. Nobody can interpret “Illustrator: 85%.” Delete them.
A portfolio with no context. Beautiful images with no brief, constraint or outcome leave the reader guessing what you contributed.
Omitting print production detail if you work in print. Prepress, stock, and spec knowledge is a real differentiator that generalist portfolios do not show.

In the header and in a dedicated section, as the sample does. Your portfolio URL is the single most important link on a design résumé — make it easy to find.
